GLP-1s Have Reached a Tipping Point
GLP-1 medications have rapidly evolved from a niche treatment primarily associated with diabetes management into one of the most influential consumer health trends in America. Today, 39% of U.S. adults know someone who has taken or is currently taking a GLP-1, signaling how deeply these medications have penetrated mainstream culture. Even more striking, 14% of U.S. adults, representing approximately 38 million people, report that they have taken or are currently taking a GLP-1. Adoption is widespread across demographics; however, white men account for 37% of current GLP-1 users and white women make up another 36%. One particularly notable audience emerges among Gen X men, where 20% report taking a GLP-1, making them 38% more likely than the average adult to be users.

For marketers, these numbers reveal that GLP-1s are more than a healthcare trend. They represent a significant consumer segment whose behaviors, spending patterns, and media engagement are creating new opportunities across industries.

Weight Loss Is the Catalyst, But Health Is the Broader Story
While weight loss dominates the conversation around GLP-1s, motivations for using these medications are more diverse than many assume.

These findings suggest that brands should move beyond simplistic "before and after" narratives and instead recognize the broader wellness aspirations driving adoption.
A closer look at the data reveals distinct motivations across demographic groups.
These differences highlight the need for audience-specific messaging strategies. The factors motivating a Gen Z user seeking metabolic health solutions may be very different from those driving a Boomer focused on weight management.

The Family Doctor Still Matters Most
Despite headlines about digital health startups and online prescription services, traditional healthcare channels remain the dominant pathway into GLP-1 treatment.
Gender differences also emerge in the patient journey.
For healthcare marketers and pharmaceutical advertisers, these findings reinforce the importance of omnichannel strategies that address both traditional care environments and emerging digital pathways.
83% of GLP-1 users say the medication has changed how they live, spend, exercise, or shop.
GLP-1s Are Reshaping Everyday Consumer Behavior
Perhaps the most significant implication for brands is that GLP-1 usage is not an isolated healthcare decision. It is creating ripple effects that influence nearly every aspect of consumer behavior. Among those taking a GLP-1, 83% report making lifestyle changes since starting the medication.

These changes illustrate that GLP-1 adoption often triggers a broader self-improvement journey, creating opportunities for brands across fitness, apparel, travel, food and beverage, and personal care categories.
The relationship between GLP-1 use and physical activity presents a significant opportunity for fitness marketers. Among current users, 45% report exercising more, and Gen Z users are 29% more likely than average to have increased their activity levels. This appears to be part of a sustained lifestyle shift: among those exercising more, 20% have purchased sports or recreation equipment in the past year, 43% plan to start a new exercise program in the next year, and 57% actively seek new ways to vary their workouts. They are also 19% more likely to have a Planet Fitness membership, highlighting an affinity for accessible, community-oriented fitness options.
Successful campaign?
Planet Fitness' "Everybody Belongs" philosophy offers a valuable blueprint for reaching this audience. Rather than promoting ideal body types or dramatic transformations, the campaign emphasizes accessibility, judgment-free participation, and sustainable fitness habits. That approach aligns closely with GLP-1 users, many of whom are focused on building healthier lifestyles, not just losing weight. By celebrating progress over perfection, the campaign demonstrates how fitness brands can position themselves as supportive partners in a consumer's long-term wellness journey.
One of the clearest ripple effects of GLP-1 adoption is increased apparel spending. 3 in 10 GLP-1 users say they are buying new clothes because of changes in their bodies, with Millennials 24% more likely than average to be doing so. Many are reevaluating how they present themselves and investing in products that reflect a healthier, more confident version of themselves.
These consumers over-index for brands including Columbia (+30%), Calvin Klein (+29%), Hanes (+26%), Levi's (+20%), The North Face (+20%), Lululemon (+17%), and Champion (+13%), making them a valuable audience across both activewear and everyday apparel.
Successful campaign?
Many GLP-1 users are embracing a broader lifestyle transformation, making campaigns like Lululemon's "Be All In" especially relevant. By focusing on confidence, movement, and wellness rather than appearance, the campaign created an emotional connection rooted in personal growth. That positioning aligns closely with GLP-1 users, many of whom view their journey as part of a broader lifestyle transformation rather than simply a weight-loss effort. As consumers adopt healthier habits and gain confidence, brands that celebrate self-improvement rather than size or weight loss will be best positioned to build lasting loyalty.
Travel may not be the first category associated with GLP-1s, but these medications are influencing far more than health and wellness decisions. Among GLP-1 users, 11% say they are traveling more since starting treatment, with Hispanic users 32% more likely than average to report increased travel. These consumers appear eager to make the most of their new lifestyle, seeking experiences that support exploration and activity. They are 65% more likely to have flown American Airlines on their most recent domestic trip and 24% more likely to have visited a national park. Looking ahead, they are 15% more likely to plan an international vacation to South America and 12% more likely to plan a visit to a theme park within the next year. Loyalty also matters, with 63% preferring hotel brands that offer rewards programs.
Successful campaign?
Travel brands can take a cue from campaigns such as Marriott Bonvoy's "Good Travel" initiative and World of Hyatt FIND Experiences, which emphasize enrichment, well-being, and personal growth rather than destinations alone. That positioning aligns with many GLP-1 users, who are embracing broader lifestyle changes and new experiences as their health and confidence improve. The loyalty opportunity is substantial, as GLP-1 travelers are 36% more likely to belong to World of Hyatt, 16% more likely to participate in IHG One Rewards, and 14% more likely to be Marriott Bonvoy members. As travel becomes part of a broader wellness journey, brands that market experiences and self-discovery will be best positioned to connect with this audience.

The Next Wave of Growth Is Already Forming
Current GLP-1 consumers are only part of the story. Another 20% of U.S. adults, approximately 52 million people, are considering taking a GLP-1 for weight loss.
However, these pressures are also influencing financial decisions in ways that may have long-term implications.
Perhaps the most compelling opportunity for marketers is that prospective GLP-1 consumers are both highly engaged and highly persuadable. Unlike many healthcare audiences, they are remarkably receptive to advertising and already have a positive perception of these medications.
This indicates a consumer group that is actively researching options, open to information, and willing to be influenced through media exposure. For pharmaceutical companies and agency planners, this represents a rare audience that combines high intent with a demonstrated openness to marketing influence, making educational, informative, and action-oriented messaging especially effective.
Market to the Lifestyle, Not Just the Medication
The rise of GLP-1s represents far more than a pharmaceutical trend. It is reshaping how millions of consumers eat, exercise, shop, travel, socialize, and manage their health. Current GLP-1 consumers are embracing lifestyle changes that touch multiple industries, while tens of millions more are considering joining them.
For brands, the biggest opportunity lies in recognizing that GLP-1 consumers are not simply pursuing weight loss. They are pursuing transformation, confidence, health, and self-improvement. Messaging that celebrates healthier lifestyles and acknowledges consumers' evolving identities will resonate with both current users and prospective adopters. As GLP-1 adoption continues to grow, the brands that win will be those that understand the medication is just the beginning of a much larger consumer journey.
